When something goes wrong with your roof, choosing the right contractor can be just as important as choosing the right shingles.

Roofing is a major investment, and unfortunately, homeowners often have to make a decision quickly—especially after a storm or when water is already entering the home. That can make it difficult to separate established roofing companies from contractors who may be difficult to reach once the job is finished.

At Eagle Rock Roofing LLC, we believe homeowners should know who they are hiring, what questions to ask, and what signs indicate that a roofing contractor is serious about standing behind their work.

1. Look for a Roofing Company With an Established Local Presence

One of the first things homeowners should consider is whether the company actually operates and does business in the community.

After major storms, roofing companies sometimes travel into an area, complete as many projects as possible, and then move on to the next storm.

That doesn't automatically mean an out-of-area contractor does poor work, but homeowners should consider what happens if there is a problem six months or two years later.

A local roofing contractor has a reputation to maintain in the same communities where its customers live.

Eagle Rock Roofing serves homeowners throughout Monroe, Matthews, Indian Trail, Mint Hill, Waxhaw, Charlotte, Wesley Chapel, Pineville, Ballantyne, Concord, Huntersville, and surrounding areas.

We're not just trying to complete the next roof. We're building a company that intends to be part of these communities for years to come.

2. Look Beyond the Company's Own Advertising

Almost every contractor can say they're professional, experienced, or trustworthy.

The better question is:

What have they done to demonstrate it?

Homeowners can look for things such as:

  • Professional business affiliations

  • Chamber of Commerce involvement

  • Home-building or construction industry organizations

  • Better Business Bureau accreditation

  • Manufacturer relationships and certifications

  • Verified customer reviews

  • An established business address and online presence

Eagle Rock Roofing has invested in becoming part of established business and construction organizations, including involvement with the Home Builders Association and Chamber of Commerce organizations in the communities we serve.

Membership in an organization doesn't guarantee that every contractor will be perfect. However, it does demonstrate that a company is investing in its business, industry relationships, reputation, and community rather than simply operating from job to job.

3. Ask How Long They've Actually Worked in Construction

A company may be relatively new while the people operating it have many years of experience.

Those are two different things.

I have worked in the construction industry for more than 15 years, with more than half of that time focused specifically on roofing.

That experience matters because roofing involves much more than simply installing shingles.

A roofing contractor needs to understand ventilation, flashing, decking, pipe penetrations, valleys, skylights, drainage, gutters, underlayment, manufacturer specifications, and how all of those components work together as a complete roofing system.

The quality of the installation underneath the shingles is often just as important as the shingles homeowners see from the ground.

4. Be Cautious of Contractors Who Immediately Tell You That You Need a New Roof

Not every roofing problem requires a complete replacement.

Sometimes the appropriate solution is a repair.

A leaking pipe boot, damaged flashing, exposed fastener, small section of storm damage, or isolated shingle problem may be repairable without replacing an entire roofing system.

A trustworthy roofer should be willing to explain what they see and why they are making their recommendation.

If a repair makes sense, homeowners should know that.

If replacement makes more financial sense because of the roof's age or overall condition, the contractor should be able to explain that as well.

At Eagle Rock Roofing, our goal is to give homeowners enough information to make an informed decision about their property.

5. Pay Attention to the Materials Being Installed

Not every roofing estimate includes the same roofing system.

Two estimates can look similar on paper while including very different materials.

Ask the contractor what they're installing, including:

Shingles, synthetic underlayment, starter shingles, ridge cap shingles, flashing, ice and water protection, ventilation, pipe boots, and other roofing accessories.

Eagle Rock Roofing works with major roofing manufacturers including Owens Corning, GAF, and CertainTeed.

We believe homeowners should know what products are being installed on their home and understand the difference between roofing options.

6. Make Sure Someone Will Answer the Phone After the Job

This one is simple but extremely important.

A contractor can do hundreds of things correctly during a project, but homeowners also need confidence that the company will respond if something needs attention afterward.

Roofing is construction. Occasionally, something may need to be inspected, adjusted, or addressed after installation.

The real test of a contractor isn't necessarily whether an issue ever occurs.

It's how the company responds when the homeowner calls.

As a family-owned business, that's particularly important to us.

I'm a husband and father myself, and I understand that a home isn't simply a structure. It's where your family lives, sleeps, gathers, and builds its life.

When someone trusts us with their home, we take that responsibility seriously.

7. Check Reviews—but Read Them, Don't Just Look at the Stars

Online ratings are useful, but homeowners should actually read the reviews.

Look for repeated comments regarding:

  • Communication

  • Cleanliness

  • Quality of installation

  • Responsiveness

  • Honesty

  • Scheduling

  • Follow-up after completion

A large number of reviews can be helpful, but the content of those reviews often tells you much more than the overall star rating.

You can also look at how the contractor responds to customers.

Businesses eventually encounter misunderstandings or unhappy customers. How a company handles those situations can tell you a lot about how it operates.

8. Verify Insurance and Business Information

Before allowing a contractor to perform major work on your home, ask about insurance and confirm that you're dealing with an established business.

A professional roofing contractor should be comfortable answering basic questions about the company.

You should know who you're hiring before thousands—or tens of thousands—of dollars change hands.

Trust Is Earned Over Time

There isn't one certificate, membership, review, or badge that automatically makes a roofing contractor trustworthy.

Trust comes from the complete picture.

Experience.

Communication.

Quality workmanship.

Professional relationships.

Customer reviews.

Standing behind your work.

And being available when the customer needs you.

That's the kind of company we're working to build at Eagle Rock Roofing LLC.

We have more than 15 years of construction experience behind us, strong roots in the communities we serve, relationships with established industry and business organizations, and a commitment to providing homeowners with straightforward information about their roofs.
